Who WE ARE
We are Tigers Against Pollution—T.A.P for short! We are a group of university students who have chosen to lead a fight against the evils of capitalistic greed, unscrupulous business practice, and systematic injustice. Starting from only a few, we have come together to create a coalition of determined individuals of all ethnicities, ages, genders, and backgrounds and provide positive spaces meant to inform and lead them into activism.
WHAT's happening
On June 5, 2024, the Memphis Chamber of Commerce held a press conference to announce that xAI, a tech startup owned by Elon Musk, intends to build the world’s largest supercomputer in Southwest Memphis. It has been said that this “Gigafactory of Compute” will provide the computing power needed for AI searches and other forms of machine learning like self-driving cars. To accomplish this, xAI needs 150 MW of energy – enough to power 100,000 homes and 1 to 1.5 million gallons of water per day to cool the supercomputer. Since then xAI has expanded into Mississippi with Colossus #1 and #2. They are currently using approximately 400-500 MW of energy, and intend to grow to 1000 MW within the next few years.
why we're Fighting
This rapid expansion and lack of forethought in placing Memphians’ health at top priority is what drives us to fight against xAI’s operations. Their operations of “temporary” methane gas turbines, lack of commitment to building their promised water recycling plant, and abuse of improper land permits are all indicators of an aspiring oligarch infiltrating the Memphis landscape.
